What do I wear to class?
This is a very common question among prospective students. You can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable such as sweats, T-shirt and loose jeans, unitard, skirt, etc. Try to wear something that shows your bodyline so that your movements are visible. Also, bring a shawl or something to tie around your hips. This will help you feel what you hips are doing. We have hip scarves, veils, and finger cymbals for sale at the Global Dance Collective for anyone who needs them or wants to add to their collection. When you start coming to class regularly you can build your dance collection, but until then this is what you will need.
How much do classes cost?
Look at the bottom of the Class Page for class prices. Remember, the first class is free so you can always come and try it!
What happens if I miss a class?
We understand that sometimes you may not be able to come to class. All of Angela's classes are structured so that even if you miss a class, you can pick right up the next week. Classes are not refundable but are transferable so you do not lose any money that you have paid and you can always take that class during another class time.
Can I take more then one class per week?
Yes. You can take as many as you would like if you are trying to learn faster or get more physical activity.
Can I start class at any time?
Yes. You don't have to contact us before you come to class unless you have specific questions. Classes are structured for the student to be able to start at any time.
What if I am out of shape or have no dance experience?
That is fine. Introduction to Belly Dance focuses on the foundations of this dance form which will help you start to develop dance experience and physical strength and stamina for the dance.
Do I have to perform?
No. There are many students who take class for their own enjoyment and never desire to perform. After you start to develop as a student you may decide that you want to perform or you may decide that it is not for you. Your instructor will work with you on stage dynamics and performance technique and will let you know of student opportunities if you do wish to develop your performance skills.
Is it a good workout?
Yes! You will be using muscles that you have probably never used before to isolate your movements. This dance form increases flexabilty and strength while also being an aerobic workout. Many women also find it to be relaxing and a great stress reliever.
What about my size, is it just a bunch of skinny girls in class?
Size doesn't matter. Women of all shapes a sizes take lessons. There are very petite women in class and very voluptuous women and we all have a blast together!
Am I too old to take classes?
You are never to old! This dance form is a great way to keep moving and feel young. Classes have women from their teens to their 70s and everywhere in between.
What if I have had an injury in the past?
First talk with you doctor and make sure they say it is ok for you to begin classes. Then talk with you instructor about your physical weakness or sensitivities and any modification if needed. Some conditions have been known to improve with proper exercise and body alignment. Body awareness is key and we take it very seriously.
